URPP Language and Space Language and Space Lab

SDS Group

The SDS Group is involved in two complementary research directions. The first one aims at a better understanding of spatial distribution of language features, languages, or language families through geographic information, i.e. going from space to language. The second direction examines language, in its written and spoken form, as a source of new geographic information with the goal of gaining an insight into geographic concepts (such as spatial relations) reflected in language. This second perspective could be considered going from language to space.

Consequently, each ongoing project of the SDS Group can be associated with either the first or the second of the research perspectives sketched out above (and visualised in the following).
