URPP Language and Space

Systems of Nominal Determination in Europe and Beyond

University of Zurich, June 6-7, 2024

Call for Papers

This is the final conference of the research group SyNoDe (Systems of nominal determination in contact, Link) of the University Research Priority Program Language and Space at the University of Zurich. The aim of the conference is to create a space for scientific exchange between researchers from this group and other researchers with similar interests.

We call for proposals for talks and posters on topics related to nominal determination, focusing on, but not restricted to, 1) Number Marking; 2) Partitivity; 3) Differential Object Marking; 4) Possessives; 5) Agreement; and 6) Syntax and semantics of deictic categories. Works on both European and non-European languages (standard and non-standard) are welcome, with a synchronic, a diachronic, or a contact perspective. Particular interest lies in the investigation of the spread of linguistic features across geographical areas and the spatial distribution of speakers.

Talks will be 20 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes of discussion. Submissions are limited to 1 single-authored and 1 co-authored abstract per participant, or 2 co-authored abstracts per participant.

Abstracts should be written in English and be anonymous, with contact details in the body of the email (name/affiliation/email address). They should be no longer than 500 words (excluding references and examples) and must specify the format of the proposal (talk or poster presentation). Please send your abstract directly to synode@spur.uzh.ch by email, both as a PDF and a Word file.

Important dates

The deadline for submission is extended to 15 January 2024.
Notification of acceptance will be sent before 30 January 2024.
